A child assessment is a structured, evidence-based evaluation conducted by qualified therapists (speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, or special educators) to understand your child’s:
Developmental milestones
Communication and speech skills
Learning abilities
Behaviour and social skills
Sensory or motor challenges
The goal is to identify strengths, diagnose concerns (if any), and create an individualized therapy or education plan.
Depending on your child’s needs, assessments usually take:
1–2 hours for screening
2–4 hours or multiple sessions for detailed evaluations
Some children may need observation across more than one visit for accurate results.
Yes. Parent feedback is essential.
After the evaluation, therapists will:
Explain results clearly
Share strengths and challenges
Discuss diagnosis (if applicable)
Recommend therapies or interventions
Provide a written report
Confidentiality is strictly maintained.
It is generally not recommended.
Assessments require:
Minimal distractions
Focused observation
Quiet interaction
If unavoidable, arrange supervision for siblings to avoid disruption.
Please carry:
Previous medical or therapy reports
School records/IEP (if available)
Hearing/vision test reports
Notebooks or work samples
List of concerns or questions
Snacks/water for the child
Comfort item/toy (if needed)
As early as possible.
Early intervention (0–6 years) shows the best improvement in:
Speech delays
Autism spectrum concerns
Learning difficulties
Sensory or motor delays
If you notice delays, do not “wait and watch.” Early support prevents future challenges.
Not always.
You may:
Directly book an assessment at therapy centres
Or get a referral from a pediatrician/neurologist/developmental pediatrician
Some government services may require medical documentation.
Approximate ranges:
Private therapy: ₹500–₹1,500 per session
Multidisciplinary centres: ₹800–₹2,000 per session
Government/NGO centres: low cost or subsidized
Monthly costs depend on frequency (usually 2–5 sessions/week).
Always ask about:
Package plans
Discounts
Financial aid options
There is no single “hardest” age, but many families report challenges at:
2–5 years → delayed speech, meltdowns, diagnosis period
6–12 years → school adjustment, social skills difficulties
Teen years → emotional regulation, peer relationships, independence
Early intervention significantly reduces later difficulties.
Common early warning signs include:
No eye contact
No response to name by 12 months
Delayed speech or no words
Repetitive behaviors (hand flapping, lining objects)
Poor social interaction
Sensory sensitivities (sound/touch/food)
Limited pretend play
If multiple signs are present, consult a developmental pediatrician or psychologist.
Autism is mainly genetic.
Research shows:
80–90% → genetic factors
Small percentage → environmental influences during pregnancy or early brain development
Vaccines do not cause autism.
Common core signs:
Poor eye contact
Delayed speech/language
Limited social interaction
Repetitive behaviors
Strict routines/resistance to change
Sensory issues
Unusual play patterns
Options:
Inclusive mainstream school
Regular school + shadow teacher
Resource room support
Special school (if high support needs)
Decision depends on the child’s:
Communication
Independence
Sensory tolerance
Academic readiness
Inclusive settings work best when schools provide proper accommodations.
early childhood (2–5 years) is usually most demanding due to communication and behavior challenges. Early therapy helps significantly.
